Star Fox Assault - Software Publisher's Description:
Star Fox Assault review:3 stars (Completely Missed The Mark) - When I bought this game, I was skeptical... but it was strange because even the guy at the counter told me that it was getting "kick ass" reviews. I took his word for it simply because I had always been a huge star fox fan. Even while reading all the reviews on this board, I've noticed that people geniunly find this game to be enjoyable. That was simply not the case for me... but I guess that all depends on what perspective you look at this game.
The "Already A Star Fox Fan" perspective: So you've played all the other star fox games. You loved the SNES installment, and the 64 version blew you away. Well, all I can say is that dont play assault expecting very much, especially if you're looking for action in the form of arwing missions. As you undoubtedly already know, this game gives the option of playing in the arwing, the landmaster, or on foot. The ground based missions are horribly repetitive, each giving you the same "destroy this many targets" objective. For me, I found the on foot, and landmaster missions to basically go hand in hand... which equals Lame. The arwing missions are somewhat pleasant. They have good lenth, but its tough just focusing on those few flying missions and saying "wow what a fun game" without thinking about what a scar the other missions leave on it.
The mulitplayer experience, however... is an upgrade. Quite an upgrade in fact. To many peoples joy, you even get to play in the wolfen in this game. On foot, there are plenty of weapons to keep you busy, and the maps themselves deserve a thumbs up as far as design. If anything, the multiplayer experience will keep you busier than the main game since there are a bunch of levels and extra modes for you to unlock. It may seem odd for a star fox game, but you could buy this game just for the multiplayer and actually get more enjoyment out of that.
The "Never Played StarFox Before" perspective: This is a tough one. If you like space themed fighting and other sort of "out of this world" sci fi stuff such as bugs invading your solar system and trying to wipe you out, then you might like this game. If you're under 10. It odd, but when I play this game I just get this vibe that its for little kids. I mean everything from the music, to the voice acting, to the visuals just makes me think "saturday morning cartoon rip off". I know this isnt much a review for someone who has never played these games, but what can I say? I've played them all, it would be tough to put something like that into perspective. But hey, at least you would enjoy the multiplayer. 4 stars (Fox is good but he doesn't have much replay value.) - Fred's Review: 9/10 stars
The fourth in the Satrfox series. In StarFox 64, you battled the armies of Andross and Andross himself. But in this game, you battle the Aparoids to their very own home planet and face the aparoid queen. 10 missions will only last you about 2+ hours and you can't choose multiple paths like you could in the 64 version. The graphics have been upgraded and I didn't find anything wrong with that part. The gameplay is very simple and easy to pickup but parts can become frustrating at times because you have to go all the way back to the checkpoint when you die. Most bosses are quite simple and easy but the Aparoid queen packs quite a punch. I'd give this game's replay value an ok but not great. I wish there were more single player levels. Multi-player is where the real fun comes in. Deathmatches, dog-fights, you name it. Powerful weapons make it fair when it's Arwing(or Land-Master) versus regular players. Chaotic fun comes in when you or your enemies get powerups and blow you up. Some characters are rigged like Wolf, he completely beats Fox's stats. Must buy game.5 stars (An interesting twist) - This game is very fun. When you play Vs. mode, you can't help but wish that there would be a co-op mode with up to three other friends so you can set up a plan against the enemy in Story mode. I hate the music in Vs. mode, but it is still a fun game. You can even hijack an Arwing or ride on an opponents wing. Also, when in an Arwing, you can get out, and ride on top of it. In story mode, it still has the great Arwing action like in the N64. Here how I rate it:
Story: A Gameplay: A Graphics: A Sound: A Controls: A- Replay: B+ Fun: A- Overall: A Vs. mode: A- Overall: A
