Metal Gear Solid- The Twin Snakes - Software Publisher's Description:
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes review:5 stars (Cinematic Masterpiece) - The cut scenes in this game are amazing. If you like incredible story lines, exciting game play, or thrilling mysteries, or if you just like to kick some butt, then this is a must have. I will play this game over and over until the buttons on my controller no longer work. Thank you Koonami for giving us such an amazing game.3 stars (Major Disappointment) - I got this game as a gift, so that eases the frustration, and I started playing it, unfortunately after finishing the original Splinter Cell, so I was expecting something similar, and also I was expecting something else due to the fact I have read great reviews abut this game. The most frustrating thing us that you get a fixed camera angle, sometimes you get lost in what you are supposed to do, in boss fights if you don't read game guides there is no clue of what to do. What I have enjoyed are the cutscenes and the audio, but the gameplay I guess you can only like it if you are a fan of the series and hadn't played before Splinter Cell. 3 stars (A Classic story ruined by crude voice acting and cutscenes) - The original Metal Gear Solid has been widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time. It created a genre and for its time, gave us the best voice acting we'd ever seen! The story was well defined with its incredible plot twist, and well developed characters. Now, with the help of Silicon Knights, Metal Gear Solid is being presented to us the way it should be. The gameplay and graphics have been updated to perfection. Unfortunately, other aspects of the game didn't get as much ample treatment.
Terrorists have taken over a base in Alaska known as Shadow Moses Island. These terrorists are demanding that the government hand over the remains of the legendary Big Boss, and that if their demands aren't meant, they'll launch a nuclear warhead. Snake, called out of retirement, is the only man capable of taking on these terrorists and stopping their nuclear weapon known as Metal Gear. For anyone who has played the original, the story is unchanged. Every plot twist, every original guard, every original boss is still there.
The gameplay this time around has been very much improved from the original game. This is good and bad, and I'll tell you how it's bad in a little bit. Snake can now perform more task than he could in the original game. Anyone who has played Metal Gear Solid 2 knows exactly what I'm talking about. Snake can now hang over ledges, hold up guards and shake them down for items. Likewise, Snake now has to hide bodies when he kills someone. The guards are also smarter in this version and do things such as make status reports, and will hear more too.
You'd think all this would add much more challenge to the game, but since they also threw in the M9 and PSG1-T (both weapons put guards to sleep) the game is much easier. Since you can now hide in lockers and hang over ledges, the challenge presented from the original game has been taken out. Also, your life guage now starts out full. In the original you had to defeat bosses for your gauge to extend. This alone, makes the game several times easier. Not only that, but you take A LOT less damage than the original game.
The controls are also a little clunky. I'm referring specifically to using the codet and pausing the game. It should be much simplar than that, but it isn't. You must hold start and A to use the codec. If I'd made the game, I would've just made it the start button--end of story.
The new gameplay is really nice, but it's about the only thing that makes this version worth buying. But in all essence, those of us who really enjoyed the storyline of the original will be disappointed.
For one thing, the voice acting. Hideo Kojima makes games full of incredible voice acting. The original MGS had some of the best voice acting ever in a video game. Well, the original voices are gone, and the new voices lack feeling. Most noticeable is the Cyborg Ninja. In the original he actually SOUNDED like a cyborg ninja. In this he sounds like a guy you'd meet walking down the street. The only character who sounds the same is Solid Snake, everyone else sounds so different. This wouldn't really be a problem if the dialogue wasn't almost exactly the same as the original! Some dialogue is changed but for the most part it isn't. Konami could've easily ported over the voices. The original had much better voices, and they actually had feeling in them. In this game, the characters' voices are devoid of any feeling whatsoever.
Then there are the cutscenes. They look... well... trite. Metal Gear Solid was about realism, and being realistic. To be as close to life as possible. They seem to have forgotten this. Why the hell does Snake have to jump off a missle and make it hurl back to the enemy to prove he's this tough guy? In the original he did nothing of the sort, and his attitude showed just how tough he really was! This game seems to be all about being "cool". Well, the way these cutscenes are improved doesn't make it look cool. Instead, it looks dumb, and like it's trying too hard to out do the original. Also, a lot of these "cool" scenes look like something out of "The Matrix". Still, Snake shouldn't have to do such over the top things to prove he's a tough guy. All he needs is attitude to prove that, and in this one he doesn't have that attitude. In short, the new cutscenes look dumb.
The music has also been changed. No more classic boss fight music. The music in this version isn't heart-pounding like the original, and doesn't fill you with emotion or even like you're supposed to be sneaking. For what it's worth, the remixed version of some of the music is great. The new music isn't good, but the remixed music stands out as being fairly decent.
Really, the only reason to get this is the updated gameplay and graphics. If you enjoyed the story, pop in the original PSOne version and watch the demo theater. Other than that, The Twin Snakes is only for those who cared about the gameplay. Those of us who liked the characters and story will pop in the original PSX version.
The Good +AMAZING GRPAHICS +New and improved gameplay +Same classic story
The Bad -Clunky controls -A gripload easier than the original (HARD mode in this one is EASIER than Easy Mode in the original) -The cutscenes have lost their emotion. Snake doesn't have attitude anymore, just antics that he does so he can look "cool" -The voice acting is nothing short of bad. If you really liked the storyline of the original, it's ruined by these new voice actors
Overall, if you love the gameplay, get it. If you love the storyline, get the original.
